Microsoft 365 E7: when the $99 bundle pays off, and when it doesn't

Microsoft 365 E7 is the new top tier. It launched on 1 May 2026 at $99 per user per month and bundles everything in E5 with Microsoft 365 Copilot, Agent 365 and the Entra Suite. Whether it saves you money depends entirely on what you already pay for. For many companies, it doesn't.

What E7 actually is

E7 is a bundle, not a new product. You get Microsoft 365 E5, Microsoft 365 Copilot, the Entra Suite, and Agent 365, Microsoft's governance layer for AI agents. Bought separately, those parts cost around $117 per user per month since the July 2026 price increase. E7 at $99 saves roughly $18, about 15%, if you were going to buy all four anyway.

That last part is the whole question.

The maths that matters

If you are on E5 and have rolled Copilot out broadly, you pay about $90 per user per month today. E7 is $9 more. For that you get Entra Suite and Agent 365. If you were considering either one, E7 is close to a formality.

If you are on E5 without Copilot, E7 is a $39 jump per user per month. Multiply by your seat count and by twelve. That is the real price of the upgrade, and it only makes sense if Copilot is genuinely in your plans for most of those users.

If you are on E3, E7 is not your next step. There are cheaper moves to look at first.

The promotion, and its deadline

Through CSP there are launch promotions on purchases made until 30 September 2026: 10% off a one-year term from 10 seats, and 15% off from 100 seats, which brings E7 to about $84. A three-year term at 15% is available from 300 seats. Subscriptions bought by 30 September keep their terms for the full contract period. From 1 October, new subscriptions pay the full $99.

One detail worth knowing: at list price, the three-year term costs the same per year as the one-year term. The long commitment buys you a price lock, nothing more. The real discount sits in the promotion, and it ends in September.

A deadline is not a reason to buy. It is a reason to do the maths now, calmly, while the discount is still on the table.

Three things the brochure won't lead with

First, the $99 does not cover running AI agents. Agent 365 is the management and security layer. Building and running agents is paid separately, as consumption, through Copilot Studio or Microsoft Foundry. Budget for that before you commit.

Second, Security Copilot is no longer an E7 argument. Since spring 2026 Microsoft includes it in every E5 plan at no extra cost, with a monthly usage allowance that scales with your E5 seat count. If your security team was the loudest voice for upgrading, check what you already have first.

Third, nobody says every user needs E7. A mixed setup, E7 for the roles that live in Copilot and E5 for everyone else, is often the better deal per seat. Microsoft sells simplicity. You are allowed to buy precision.

What we'd do

Count what you actually pay per user today, including add-ons. Compare it to the E7 price for the users who would really use what's in it. In practice, a review like that rarely comes back empty. The question is usually which direction the answer points.
